This view of the first-quarter moon displays not only the beauty of our
natural satellite, but the wide field of view of the Fick Observatory CCD
camera.
Our field of view is about 1/3 of a degree on a side. For
comparison, the images that the Hubble Space Telescope can obtain are a mere
1/80 the area that we can see. While HST provides some spectacular images
of the detailed small-scale structure of astronomical objects, wide field
imaging systems such as at Fick Observatory are needed to reveal the large
scale structure.
The yellow shape shows the field of view of the Hubble Space telescope on the
same scale as the Fick Observatory images.
